…No other band would be appropriate for today’s audio post.

Anyway, I’ve realized that since I’ve gushed on about my favorite Hum song on here before, it was only a matter of time before I did the same for my favorite Paper Chase song. That’s a bit harder, because I had to figure out which one it was.* It’s not as clear, because which Paper Chase song I prefer at any given time depends on… Well, a lot of things. My mood, the weather, the headphones I’m using, etc. Though it’s hard to top the experience of listening to “Let’s Be Bad Henry, Let’s Be Really Bad” when you have really good earbuds (like the ones I’m using now), I think this one is, in most situations, my favorite.

Why? It’s hard to explain. I feel like this song kind of sums up everything about this band that I’ve ever loved, in ways that I can’t really put in to words. It has this hopeless/hopeful conflict to it, which I honestly can’t get enough of, torn between “why not, we’re all doomed” and “whistle past the graveyard.” And it feels very familiar to me. I know fear of death and feelings of futility are nigh-universal among humans, but this song just seems to articulate these things as I’ve actually experienced them, which is a rare thing indeed. All in all, it’s a song I feel very attached to, and I’m very glad, for some reason, that it just so happens to be the final song on their final album. It’s a wonderful way to wrap up a discography, especially this one in particular.

*Besides the two I mentioned above, here are the other contenders for Best Paper Chase Song Ever: “This is Only a Test (The Tornado),” “…The Unopened Email to God,” “Now, We Just Slowly Circle the Draining Fishbowl,” “Neat; Manageable: Piles,” “When (and if) the Big One Hits… I’ll Just Meet You There,” and “The House is Alive and the House is Hungry.” Along with some I’m probably forgetting, and some I’m not but am yet to fully appreciate for some reason.
